NTLB Creator Danny Rubin Speaks at ODU, Chats on the Radio
The week of September 15th was a busy one for News To Live By. But busy is good. That means word is getting around about the blog, which is always positive.
On September 16, I spoke to the newly-formed Young Professionals Group at Old Dominion University in Norfolk. I’m impressed with the students in the group as many already have career plans after graduation. There were even a few freshmen in the room! One month into college, I’m sure I thought more about the big frat party on Saturday night than a job out in the real world. But these students have their minds in the right place.
At ODU, we discussed professionalism and how to talk with employers at a job interview. We even acted out a conversation between a job candidate and the boss. I hope the students took away practical lessons on how to be memorable in the hiring process. My thanks to Bo Ram Yi and Caleb Holland at ODU for asking me to speak. They also made this cool poster to promote the event!
The next day, September 17, I was back in Norfolk for an interview on “Hearsay with Cathy Lewis,” a popular noontime news and discussion program on 89.5 WHRV, the NPR affiliate in Hampton Roads. Cathy was generous enough to devote half of her show (30 minutes) to News To Live By. We talked about the origins of the blog, recapped several recent News To Live By columns and talked about millennials in the workplace.
I’m grateful to Cathy for her time and interest in News To Live By. She “gets it” and understands how young people want news and information today.

With News To Live By, the next opportunity can emerge from anywhere. And that’s the fun of the game.
Remember: as long as you stay hungry and pursue your passion, doors will open you never knew existed.
Have a great weekend!
– Danny
